Uplifting Families, Building Resilient Communities

Hey BBU HUB! Let’s shine a light on the Iowa Black Doula Collective, a wonderful group dedicated to empowering families throughout Iowa. Founded by the dynamic duo Ebonie Bailey, CD(DONA), CLS, CPD, and Selchia Cain-Hinton, CD(DONA), this collective is all about providing comprehensive, judgment-free support for expecting families.

Meet the Founders

Ebonie and Selchia are trailblazers as some of Iowa's first certified doulas of color. They came together to address the pressing needs of Black birthing people, especially given the alarming rates of complications in fertility, pregnancy, labor, and postpartum care among Black women. Their mission? To create accessible doula support and promote holistic, evidence-based education for diverse families.

As Ebonie puts it, “We cover and provide that emotional and physical support with evidence-based education throughout the entire pregnancy—from conception to labor, birth, and into the immediate postpartum period.” They truly walk alongside families during this pivotal journey!

The Impact

Since launching, the Iowa Black Doula Collective (IBDC) has reached over 110 families, providing vital services and resources in a space where the Black experience in maternal health has often been muted. Their commitment to education and one-on-one support is making a real difference in the community.
