Empowering Families, One Connection at a Time

Hey BBU HUB! Let’s chat about Kindred Space, LA—a wonderful hub for families focusing on maternal and infant health. Founded by two incredible women, Kimberly Durdin and Allegra Hill, their journey together began back in 2010 at a birth center in Los Angeles. Allegra was a volunteer aspiring to be a midwife, while Kimberly was the director of lactation and childbirth education. From their very first meeting, there was an undeniable bond—a deep affinity rooted in love for each other and the families they serve.

The Heart of Kindred Space

Their relationship has flourished over the years, marked by mutual support through significant life events: Kimberly welcomed her sixth and last baby in 2011, and Allegra was there to celebrate when Kimberly became a grandmother in 2012. Fast forward to 2015, and Kimberly stood by Allegra as she became a mother. These moments have woven a tapestry of sisterhood, mentorship, and upliftment, all while balancing their Libra energies!

In 2018, they co-founded Kindred Space LA in response to the Black maternity health crisis affecting birthing people in the U.S. The Kindred Space LA Birthing Center officially opened its doors in 2020, becoming a vital resource for the community.

Meet the Midwives

  1. Allegra Hill, LM, CPM & IBCLC

    • Allegra is a Licensed Midwife, Certified Professional Midwife, and Lactation Consultant. She started her journey as a doula in 2010, mainly supporting families in hospital settings. After graduating from midwifery school in 2014, she became a Certified Professional Midwife and an IBCLC in 2015. Allegra co-owns Kindred Space LA and the Birthing People Foundation, where she trains and mentors birth doulas. With a focus on cultural competency and nonviolent communication, she passionately supports families in their birthing and parenting journeys.

  2. Kimberly Durdin, LM, CPM, IBCLC

    • Kimberly, a mother of six and grandmother of five, has spent nearly three decades intertwining her life with thousands of families across New York City, Washington D.C., and Los Angeles. As a Licensed Midwife and IBCLC, her work includes providing lactation care, postpartum support, and childbirth education. Kimberly co-founded Kindred Space LA, South LA’s only Black-owned birth center, and her non-profit, the Birthing People Foundation, empowers people of color by providing essential training and education to improve maternal and infant health outcomes.

  3. Hiroko Aoyagi, LM, CPM

    • Born and raised in Japan, Hiroko's multicultural experiences shaped her empathetic worldview. After having a less-than-ideal hospital birth in Japan, she sought a different experience and discovered the empowering world of home birth. Inspired by her own journey, she joined the Nizhoni Institute of Midwifery and has attended over 70 births as a student midwife, becoming a Licensed Midwife in April 2021.
